Welcome to Omni Classics
Our Mission
Omni is a non-profit organization which seeks to increase access to the study of Classics for students in New York City. The discipline of Classics has been historically reserved for wealthy white men, which has led to a lack of diversity in the subject. As a result, Classics has gained the reputation of being an inherently “elite” field. Omni’s goal is to attack this problem by providing free tutoring in Latin and Ancient History to low-income students in order to spark an interest in Classics prior to the university level and work towards achieving equal representation among scholars. To represent our goal for equality in the Classics, we have named our company omni, which literally translates to “for everyone.”
Our Approach
Using Minimus, a Latin textbook by Cambridge University Press designed for young students, Omni will offer weekly tutoring sessions to students around New York City. These sessions will combine grammar/vocabulary exercises, basic Latin composition, and interactive games and activities. Omni envisions a typical class to be one-hour long with 5-10 students. Should there be enough interest, there will likely be multiple sections at each learning level. Classes will be geared mainly towards students with no Latin experience, but there will be opportunities for students of every level.
